'American Idol': How the Show's Inclusive New Season Reflects the Country's Progress on LGBTQ Rights

Since debuting 16 years ago on Fox, American Idol has featured a handful of LGBTQ contestants who waited until after their Idol journeys ended to publicly disclose their sexual orientations and identities, whether by personal choice or by producers’ choice. Now in its 16th season as a reboot on ABC, the Idol franchise is experiencing its most LGBTQ-friendly season ever by letting the diverse singers proudly live out loud on television.

In one recent episode alone, openly lesbian singer Jurnee impressed the judges with a fitting rendition of Andra Day’s “Rise Up,” and drag queen Ada Vox, who previously made it to the top 50 as Adam Sanders in season 12, earned another golden ticket with a soulful take on the Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun.” Most notably, both entertainers’ audition segments highlighted their true selves, a striking difference from past seasons and a reflection of how far America has progressed since 2002, when Idol became a phenomenon before any states had even legalized same-sex marriage (Massachusetts was the first in 2004, and as of 2015, it’s legal in all states).

The moments, to no one’s surprise, have attracted polarizing opinions from viewers across America, but the positive feedback about the overdue open LGBTQ representation is refreshing to see in Idol’s life cycle. “The season of the gays, i LOVE it,” one young viewer proclaimed on Twitter. Another viewer used the moments to educate his child, revealing that Idol “provided a great forum to continue the conversation with my 10-year-old daughter about LGBT equality and gender identity/expression tonight. Thank you. Truly. Thank you for normalizing humanity in all its beautiful and wonderful ways of being.”

Jurnee’s segment detailed her coming out story and her love life as a military wife, including photos of the couple getting engaged and kissing. “At times I would be dating guys just to test and make sure I'm not missing out on anything,” she said. “It wasn't until my freshman year that I knew for sure guys were not for me, they're not my cup of tea, so I came out to my family who was extremely accepting and it's just been rainbows, pun intended, ever since.”

Judge Katy Perry, who routinely stands up in support of the LGBTQ community, even provided this season with a queer-friendly viral moment when she understood Internet slang-adept contestant Noah Davis after he uttered “wig,” a word that has permeated the queer lexicon on social media. “Wait, did you just say ‘wig'?” a surprised Perry asked Davis as fellow judges Richie and Luke Bryanappeared flustered. “I know, wig. … No, it’s not your language. It’s just for us.”

That “just for us” is now for everyone, and it’s only just the beginning as more shows, not only Idol, shine the limelight on LGBTQ people. NBC’s The Voicefeatured transgender contestant Angel Bonilla this season and previously showcased Christian singer Chris Weaver’s drag persona Nedra Belle. Netflix’s Queer Eye revival and VH1’s Emmy-winning RuPaul’s Drag Race are dominating pop culture, while new shows with prominent LGBTQ characters like the CW’s Black Lightning, Freeform’s Grown-ish and NBC's Rise seem to be popping up more and more regularly.

Idol alums paving the way

Every day, people come out at their own pace at different stages in their lives, and the same holds true for former American Idol contestants. Multi-platinum Idol alums Adam Lambert (season 8) and Clay Aiken (season 2) both famously came out publicly in magazines in different ways following their impressive runner-up stints in the singing competition. “I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay," Lambert told Rolling Stone just two days after the season 9 finale in 2009, alluding to the mid-season tabloid photos that surfaced exposing him kissing an ex-boyfriend and dressing in drag. Meanwhile, Aiken confirmed his homosexuality five years after his 2003 finale amid public speculation. Aiken told People, “Yes, I’m gay,” and explained in the cover story how becoming a parent influenced the decision. “It was the first decision I made as a father,” Aiken said in 2008. “I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn’t raised that way, and I’m not going to raise a child to do that.”

It took 13 seasons before American Idol truly began to shift toward open representation by featuring its first openly gay contestant. After then-judges Jennifer Lopez told contestant MK Nobilette that she’s “not the typical American Idol” and Harry Connick Jr. questioned whether she “fit in,” Nobilette responded, “I’m very obviously gay.” In that moment, Nobilette became the first person to come out during an Idol episode. “There are always going to be people in America and everywhere else who will definitely hate me, but in the last two years, there’s been a lot of things that have really changed that and have made that a positive thing."

At the time, in 2014, more than a dozen states had legalized same-same marriage, up from zero when Idol debuted 12 years earlier, and athlete Michael Sam became the first openly gay NFL player. “The world is changing,” replied Lopez and fellow judge Keith Urban after Nobilette came out. And Idol was just starting to reflect those changes, although it was a rocky shift into the right direction with questionable judges’ comments and editing choices for another season 13 contestant, Keith London, who sang Beyoncé’s “If I Were a Boy” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love" for his Hollywood Week performances. Connick Jr. noticed that London didn’t change the pronouns while singing “If I Were a Boy.” Connick Jr. said it was a “weird choice” and Lopez described it as a “bizarre” decision. After the episode aired, London cleared the air with a coming-out tweet: “Wait, did I just basically come out on National TV? Oh well cats out of the bag! I truly can say I sang from my heart!” Idol had definitely progressed since its first season, when Fox, in a behind-the-scenes move, encouraged finalist Jim Verraros to delete an online journal entry about his sexuality, citing his identity could give him an unfair edge in voting.

Out Idol contenders have found chart success over the years. Both Lambert and Aiken achieved commercial triumphs with their debut albums, and Lambert’s 2012 sophomore album, Trespassing, even topped the Billboard 200, making him the first openly gay artist to reach No. 1. Previously, Aiken’s debut album, Measure of a Man, peaked at No. 1 in 2003, but he wasn’t openly gay until a half decade later.

Drag entertainer Adore Delano soared into Idol's seventh season’s top 16 as Danny Noriega. Later, the non-binary performer finished in third place on season 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Delano has since clocked two charting albums, with the sophomore effort, After Party, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart in 2016. Adore Delano isn’t the only drag performer who has seen chart success, and this bodes well for current contestant Ada Vox’s post-Idolcareer.

Season 2’s Frenchie Davis and season 9’s runner-up, Crystal Bowersox, both identify as bisexual. An outspoken LGBTQ advocate, Davis competed on Idol before becoming a Broadway performer and appearing on The Voice. Bowersox’s debut album, Farmer's Daughter, and second album, All That for This, earned spots on the Billboard Top 200.

More recently, season 14 top four finalist Rayvon Owen came out to the masses in his 2016 “Can’t Fight It” music video and just this year got engaged onstage at a Demi Lovato concert.

Owen recently told Billboard what advice he’d give someone who may be afraid of coming out: “Take your time. Listen to your heart. Listen to your instincts. I feel like as I’m growing, I’m learning more to trust my gut and trust my instincts, because I think that means something, and to not be afraid to walk into what that means. Explore what makes you happy. You need to be accepting of yourself, and just be patient. Try not to let society dictate how you feel, because it’s so easy to feel pressure from other people. Listen to what’s inside you, because that means something.”

All of their journeys are inspiring a new generation of LGBTQ singers and viewers because representation does matter, and that perspective isn’t lost on current contestant Jurnee: “Really knowing who I am is giving me the chance to change my entire life and hopefully inspire someone else to put their full life and dreams out there as well."

Crystal Bowersox grateful to be 'Alive' and well

THREE OAKS — It was a Thursday morning, nearly a month ago now, when musician Crystal Bowersox got the call.

The old family farmhouse in Graytown, Ohio, just east of Toledo, where she learned to sing and play the piano and guitar; the home where she wrote her first poems and songs; and the home where her mother, Kelly Bowersox, still lived, had burned to the ground.

While her mother was safe (she wasn't home at the time) the entire house and everything inside it – photos and irreplaceable heirlooms spanning generations – was gone.

"It was shocking," Crystal Bowersox says by phone during a stop in South Dakota. "There are lots of family heirlooms that are gone now. It's devastating, but my mom is doing OK, thankfully. Obviously she is shaken, but it's just stuff, and all will mend itself in time."

Shortly after Bowersox, who returns to Southwest Michigan on Friday for a concert at The Acorn Theater, received the news she set up a gofundme account to help her mom while the insurance policy could be sorted. She set a goal of $10,000, pledging $1,000 herself, and then watched as friends and fans, some anonymous, pledged $12,875 as of Wednesday.

"My fans are an incredible group of people," Bowersox says. "They are fiercely protective of me. I'll hear it after shows. They'll tell me, 'I feel like I could be your mother.' They are always asking about my health and my son. It's really touching. It's like this giant extended family that I have and I am so blessed. I was really touched and amazed at my fans for coming together. I don't know how I am going to make it up to people, but I am going to try. There are a lot of hugs after the show."

It's been eight years since Bowersox's runner-up stint on "American Idol" opposite Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze. And while she may still be unable to shake the image of the dreadlocked singer-songwriter whose bluesy growl and humble persona made her an "Idol" favorite, Bowersox has certainly used that exposure to carve out her own comfortable niche.

The culmination of that niche may be her latest effort, the 14-track live album "Alive," released last year, that features new takes on previously released material as well as songs recorded for the first time.

Under the guidance of fellow singer-songwriter and producer Jono Manson and his Kitchen Sink Studio, Bowersox performed and recorded three shows in front of 60 friends and fans in Santa Fe, N.M.

"For me, that's where it's at," Bowersox says. "The audience being there drives me in a way that I haven't yet been able to tap into when I am in a boxed up little room with no one else. I need them. I sing for them and to them. If they are not there with me, I feel like 'why am I doing this?' The same level of passion doesn't seem to be present there, so it just seemed to make sense to do a live album."

Bowersox describes the project as "an album about being grateful for every breath and every moment, even the bad ones," she says, adding, "If it weren't for the lows, we'd never get high."

Among the previously unreleased tunes are songs about her divorce from fellow musician Brian Walker, and about her son, Tony, who just turned 9, who travels with her along with their dog, Banjo.

"I feel like my life is an open book, and my songs are the journal, as cliche as that might be for a songwriter," Bowersox says. "'Now That You're Gone' is a song I wrote a few years ago with Garrison Starr and Keith Barron, both amazing songwriters and artists themselves. I wrote that shortly after my divorce, and there's a song called 'No Mistake,' which I wrote with Steve Seskin and Allen Shamblin, who have both had amazing hits with incredible artists. Allen had a hit with Bonnie Raitt, 'I Can't Make You Love Me.' It's a song about my son's situation and his father, and it's something I've never really publicly spoken about. It was liberating to write that song and to share it with the world. I am proud of everything I have done, but I am the most proud of this record. It is raw, real Crystal Bowersox from start to finish."

Bowersox discovered her penchant for music early on. She started playing the piano at age 6, sang in school choir, and by the time she was 10 had booked her first paying gig outside a little coffee shop in the mall for tips.

"I was a wild, rambunctious, troubled teen, and I got into a lot of trouble, but picking up a guitar and having that outlet kept me from getting into a whole lot more trouble," she says. "My mother was a country music fan and my dad is a classic rock blues guy, and then I grew up throughout the '90s listening to (new) country and was also a fan of Natalie Imbruglia and Alanis Morissette and Tracy Chapman and I have fallen somewhere in the middle of all of that."

At 17, Bowersox moved to Chicago, where she frequented open mics and began busking at several train stations, most notably the Washington and Lake Redline stops.

"Busking in the subway was like Social Science 101," she says. "You learn a lot about human character. No one wants to start a movement. It takes one guy to put that first dollar in your bucket and then everyone seems to follow. Oh, and I've also learned to sing over trains. You've got to be loud to sing over trains."

The day after Bowersox's second place "Idol" finish, she signed with 19 Entertainment and Jive Records, which released her debut record, "Farmer's Daughter," in December 2010. It peaked at No. 28 on the Billboard 200 chart. Ten months later, RCA Music Group shut down Jive as well as the Arista Records and J Records imprints. Bowersox was one of the many artists left without a record label following the consolidation.

In 2012, she self-released an EP of pre-"Idol" recordings called "Once Upon a Time," and was then signed with Shanachie Records to record her 2013 sophomore album, "All That For This." That album, produced by Steve Berlin and anchored by the song "Stitches," which features Jakob Dylan, reached No. 5 on Billboard's Folk Albums chart. Her 2014 seven-song EP, "Promises," was also largely recorded in Santa Fe with Manson producing.

"There was certainly a learning curve after ('American Idol') and I had to really search hard for a sense of normalcy in this newfound world of industry and lifestyle," Bowersox says. "But I'm 100 percent grateful for it. Eight years after the show, people are still coming out and it's incredible to me. ... I'm grateful to be playing music and grateful for the fans who continue to come out and support me."

Crystal Talks Performance in Athens

Crystal Bowersox, a Northwest Ohio native, has been a solo singer-songwriter ever since she became the runner-up of "American Idol" in 2010. On "American Idol," Bowersox was the first female contestant to reach the finale since 2007.

Ever since her rise to fame, Bowersox has released several albums such as “Farmer’s Daughter” and “All That for This.” Her most recent album, titled “Alive,” came out this year.

Bowersox hopes people feel more positive after hearing her album titled “Alive.” She stated her inspiration for the album came from getting through hard times.

“It’s all about ups and downs and weathering the storms …There are songs on there … that are personal, and some songs that are just meant to make people feel good,” Bowersox said. “I think that my purpose in this world is to give people a safe space to cry and when folks come to a show, and you know, hopefully, they leave feeling better than when they got there.”

Bowersox has had a busy touring schedule.

“I feel like my life is out of a suitcase, but I definitely enjoy being here,” Bowersox said.

She said her genre is a mix of lot of different types of music.

“I’m influenced by a lot of things — soul, pop, blues, country, folk, rock… There’s a little bit of all of it in there I think,” Bowersox said.

Bowersox speaks fondly of her experience on "American Idol" back in 2010.

“It was definitely a blessing. It brought a lot of joy and opportunity in my life,” Bowersox said. “It’s definitely not normal for anyone to go from complete obscurity to fame. So it spun me around a little bit, but I got my life the way it is now, and I enjoy this new normal that I’ve achieved.”

Bowersox has performed all around the world, from Malaysia, to Mexico and the United States. She said sometimes, shows don’t always go as planned, but she’s learned to roll with it.

“I’ve had Type 1 diabetes since I was six years old, and last night here in Boulder, Colorado, I had to change my insulin pump right on stage, so it was an interesting experience,” Bowersox said. “Luckily, the audience was patient and we just made it a part of the show.”

Bowersox said her most memorable experiences happen after the show.

“People come up and tell me their stories and tell me about how my music has played a role in their life, and so it’s incredible for me to hear those stories,” Bowersox said.

Her performance on Nov. 30 is going to be the first time that she has ever been to Athens.

“It’s a place that I have not yet played, so I’m really looking forward to it. I always go after shows, and sign autographs and get to meet people … This is a whole new group of people that I’ll get to meet,” Bowersox said.

Bowersox said she has heard good things about Athens.

“I do hear that it’s a beautiful town, and a lot of my musician friends have been through there and so I’m looking forward to discovering it on my own,” Bowersox said.

Bowersox hopes the audience feels connected to her as she is performing, and she wants the audience to feel more positive than before she got on stage.

“I really like to make it feel like it’s my living room and we are just hanging out and you know, we have a conversation, rather than me performing for them … [I] hope that people will leave happier than when they got there,” Bowersox said.

Bowersox is performing at The Foundry on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $65 for meet and greet tickets.

Video premiere of "Until Then" on Cowboys & Indians

Ohio native Crystal Bowersox has always been in tune with her musical talents, latching onto her guitar for support in a chaotic world. After moving to Chicago as a teenager and taking on odd jobs, Bowersox would spend her free time drawing crowds busking on underground subway platforms and performing on open-mic night at a variety of venues.

Taking a chance, Bowersox auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol, where her innate talent was revealed through her memorable performances. Her renditions of songs like “Natural Woman” and “Up to the Mountain” would later guide her to the finish line, earning her the runner-up position.

Since then, Bowersox has stayed true to her refreshingly free-spirited style, releasing songs and albums with honest, profound lyrics and using her star power to become an advocate and spread awareness for type 1 diabetes.

Her debut album, Farmer’s Daughter, was gritty and raw with pain, revealing dark truths about the mundane points in her life, while her second album All That for This, was a light at the end of a tunnel, alternating between pain and acceptance.

Singer-Songwriter Crystal Bowersox To Release Alive

Singer-Songwriter Crystal Bowersox To Release Alive

New live album offers take on life, love, resilience through a variety of genres

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- April 10, 2017 -- Singer-songwriter Crystal Bowersox is known for many things: her soulful and distinctive voice; her ability to transcend genres across folk-pop, classic rock, soul, blues and country; and her capacity for spreading a positive message of love and light through her songwriting. Her next adventure is Alive, recorded at the Kitchen Sink Studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The live album is set to release June 16, fully displaying her songwriting prowess and unmistakable voice.

Drawing on her various influences to make the kind of music that resonates with her spirit, Alive is both tender and tough, rough yet polished, encompassing many genres without falling neatly into one category. When describing the album, Bowersox says it is the trust music she has released to date, thanks in part to the team of musicians comprising the “chosen family” she tours with, their talents spread throughout the album. Guitarist David DePrest shares songwriting credits on the down-but-certainly-not-out “A Broken Wing,” as well as “Let Me Walk Away.” Bowersox’s live set addresses each of her influences, whether it be through “The Ride,” with its fury of blues-driven energy, “Marlboro Man” and its cinematic look inside an ill-fated love with a wannabe cowboy, the sweet, mandolin-tinged “Mine All Mine,” or the soulful “He Calls Me Angel” and its roadmap to unconditional love. The set closes with Bowersox’s lively take on Kris Kristofferson’s classic “Me & Bobby McGee,” a Bowersox fan favorite.

Bowersox hopes that Alive gives listeners something to take with them on their own journey, so that they, too, can feel truly alive. Not only is the title a play on words, representing the rawness of the tracks, but it pertains to the place where Crystal currently is in her life: a place of joy, fulfillment, and stability for her and her eight year old son.

A northwest Ohio native currently calling Nashville home, Bowersox has built her life around music, a love that developed at an early age. Dead set on a career in music, she moved to Chicago as a teenager, where she performed on subway platforms and worked odd jobs. She broadened her musical horizons in the city and ultimately auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol. Her time on the show proved to be well spent, as she immediately left the the soundstage for the recording studio. She has since released two LP’s, two EPs, and several singles. She has also used her talents to benefit several causes close to her heart, and has become an advocate and inspiration for people living with Type 1 Diabetes.

With “a voice like dirt and diamonds,” as one songwriting partner put it, Bowersox is inspired by what’s to come: she says it is what’s in front of her, not what’s behind her, that will define her personal and professional evolution. Alive is certainly a step in the right direction, offering Bowersox’s story of resilience and perseverance in every note.

INDIANAPOLIS, July 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Crystal Bowersox understands how crucial it is to properly manage diabetes and find a healthy balance on and off the stage. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 6, Crystal – now 30 – rose from humble beginnings in northwestern Ohio to reach the heights of American Idol in 2010 and an ongoing musical career that has followed. Having nearly lost her spot on the show due to a short hospitalization brought on by the rigorous taping and rehearsal schedule, she vowed to make it her mission to touch others impacted by diabetes with her music and her message.

Crystal's grit and determination recently caught the eye of Lilly Diabetes, which today introduced her as its newest type 1 diabetes ambassador. In this role, Crystal will speak to children with diabetes at summer camps and other events, sharing her story and inspiring them to reach for their dreams. Her ambassadorship is one more way Lilly Diabetes, who has donated $31 million in medication, scholarships and educational materials since 2001, supports diabetes camps.

"Growing up with diabetes, I felt isolated from other kids because they didn't understand the challenges I faced, and today I know there are many who experience the same things," said Crystal. "However, despite the obstacles, I learned how to manage the disease, and I try to live my life to the fullest. That's why I'm excited to partner with Lilly Diabetes to tell my story and encourage kids."

As part of her ambassador role, Crystal will speak about her experiences with diabetes in a national satellite television and radio media tour today and be a featured speaker at the Friends for Life® conference in Orlando, Florida, on July 7. Friends for Life is an annual international conference that gathers diabetes experts, health care providers, researchers and families who have children with diabetes to learn and share the most current information on diabetes care.

"We love having Crystal attend our Friends for Life conference because she's so down to earth with kids and their families," said Jeff Hitchcock, president, Children with Diabetes®. "It's important for children with diabetes to hear real success stories, and Crystal shares her experiences in such a warm and inclusive way. It's inspiring to see how she connects, and how important her story is to kids and their parents, who are understandably worried about what their child's future may hold."

Later this month, Crystal will make stops at diabetes camps and events to meet with children who have diabetes as part of the Lilly Camp Care Package (LCCP) program, one of the largest diabetes camp support programs in the United States. While on the road, she'll join two LCCP program veterans: Olympic cross-country skier Kris Freemanand NASCAR® XFINITY Series driver Ryan Reed, who began their camp tours in June.

Camps Make a Difference
Throughout its 16 years of support, Lilly Diabetes has found attending a diabetes summer camp can be a valuable experience for children learning to live with the disease, particularly those transitioning from parental care to self-care. A three-year survey by the American Diabetes Association® showed camp experience increases some children's diabetes knowledge, self-confidence, diabetes management and emotional well-being. It also showed the number of campers with a clear understanding of diabetes management increased 11 percent, and those with the ability to manage diabetes-related problems increased 10 percent. Newly diagnosed campers (less than one year since initial diagnosis) changed the most, with 19 percent showing improvement in their ability to manage diabetes-related issues.1

"As someone who was diagnosed with diabetes as a child, Crystal Bowersox understands what newly diagnosed children can go through. She is a terrific example of someone who has managed the ups and downs of the disease," said Mike Mason, vice president, U.S., Lilly Diabetes. "We are excited to include her perspective as we continue to meet the needs of children with diabetes. We look forward to seeing her connect with children in those important ways."

Crystal's 2016 summer diabetes camp tour begins July 18. To hear or read her story, or for more information on other Lilly Diabetes support programs, please visit www.lillydiabetes.com. To find a camp in your area, visitwww.diabetescamps.org.
